bookworm monday: delirium

Delirium by Lauren Oliver

I’m sure I’ve mentioned it before but I can’t say it enough – I’m loving the fact that dystopian fiction is so in right now. There are just so many good books in this particular genre. As a person with an occasionally over-active imagination, its not hard for me to picture a world of extreme government regulations on where we can go, what we can think and who we can associate with. *shrugs*

Anywho – Delirium is a worthwhile read. The idea that “love” is against the law and treated as a disease to be cured in this story is what makes it subtly different from some of the other dystopian fiction books I’ve read. I liked this book so much more than Matched (which at a passing glance seems somewhat similar).

I was a little disappointed in the ending but that had more to do with the romantic in me than the quality of writing(which is excellent, in my opinion). What can I say? I love happy endings. :)

What are you reading this week?

bookworm monday: the buddha in the attic

The Buddha in the Attic by Julie Otsuka

The book follows a group “picture brides” on their journey to the U.S. from their small villages in Japan and ends with their internment after the Pearl Harbor attack.

The Buddha in the Attic wasn’t at all what I was expecting. It was written in a collective voice – almost in prose, rather than written in the first person or narrative . Its a quick read – roughly 105 Nook pages, and definitely worth your time. After reading it, I’m curious about this particular time period and on the hunt for other books about picture brides.

bookworm monday: the joy luck club

The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan

This book popped up on my Amazon recommendation list after I read Snow Flower and the Secret Fan. I’ve seen the movie a number of times but as is usually the case, I loved the book so much more, but I am feeling the need to go watch the movie again just so I can compare the two in my mind and point out the differences. .

The thing that I loved most about this book is that Amy Tan was able to write about the complicated nature of mother-daughter relationships. The feelings of frustration, hope, anger, support but most importantly love. The stories of each of the characters melded together really well, resulting in a beautifully written story.

I put out an all call to my FB friend’s list this past weekend to see who would be interested in joining an online book club. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that enough  people will be interested in giving it a try.

bookworm monday: 2012 reading list

I’ve been scouring Amazon and listening to recommendations from friends to come up with some reads to keep me busy. I challenged myself to read 30 books by the end of the year. I’m not sure how realistic that will be once the baby is here, but at least I’ve got a good bunch to keep me going until he gets here.

What books are on your Must Read list this year?

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

A Northern Light by Jennifer Donnelly

The Dovekeepers by Alice Hoffman

The Bronze Horseman by Paullina Simmons

Before I Go To Sleep by S. J. Watson

The American Heiress by Daisy Goodwin

Prized by Caragh O’Brien (sequel to Birthmarked)

Insurgent by Veronica Roth (sequel to Divergent)

Honolulu by Alan Brennert

The Paris Wife by Paula McLain

2011 reading wrap-up

At the beginning of the year, I challenged myself to read 50 books. I didn’t quite hit that goal but I got close – last night I started my 48th book of the year (although I haven’t quite finished book 47). My book list for the year was pretty wide ranging as far as genres go. Romance to historical fiction to dystopian fiction(my favorite of the bunch) to paranormal to contemporary to chick lit. I was all over the place.

My favorite books of the year were:

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins- I blasted through this trilogy in less than two weeks. Seriously, if you haven’t read this book or any in this genre before, you are doing yourself a great disservice. Hands down, this was my absolute favorite of the year. Its been made into a movie that is due out in March. Guess what my serious first post-baby outing is going to be?

The Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley- An epically long book but a worthwhile read. This book has me more curious than ever about the legends of Avalon, Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table.

Shiver by Maggie Steifvater – I think Amazon recommended this to me based on the fact that I’d read the Twilight trilogy. Don’t hate on me, but I enjoyed this so much better. Maggie Steifvater’s writing is beautiful. Read this book!

Divergent by Veronica Roth – The dystopian fiction genre really sucked me in this year. Divergent is another that was high on my list. Great writing, lots of action. I’m waiting impatiently for the sequel.

Mistress of Rome by Kate Quinn – In my opinion, anything depicting Ancient Rome is worth reading. I loved that this book was written from various character viewpoints rather than the all-seeing narrator. Another one to add to your must-read list.

For 2012, I’m cutting myself down to a realistic expectation of reading 30 books. We’ll see just how realistic that number is when I’ve got a newborn strapped to my chest while trying to keep up with a seven-year old. Maybe reading will be my lock-myself-in-the-bathroom-to-get-some-peace time. ;) I’m also toying around with the idea of trying to round up reader friends who would be interested in starting a book club. Maybe having some accountability and people to chat about my reads with will keep me motivated despite the sleep deprivation.

**PSA** For those of you who haven’t made the switch over to an e-reader yet:

I to was one of those people who stood back and snottily said “I like the way real books smell. I like the way they feel. I will never own an ereader.”

Then my Nana bought a Nook for me for my birthday. And I love it. There is something wonderful about being able to have every book you’ve read recently or plan to read readily available at the touch of a finger. And if you are a book hoarder like I was, owning an ereader will help you purge those books you’ve been stacking against the footboard of your bed. You’ll discover all kinds of new floor space. ;)

I spent an hour last night reading through book descriptions and picking my first reads for 2012. Have you started planning your 2012 TBR list? Comment below with some of your top picks.
